  1. Some organizations do offer homestays in cities. Try googling Nepal homestay and checking into the organizations listed. Some only offer rural homestays, but there are some that have host families who live near Kathmandu…I’m not sure about other cities.
Make sure that you thoroughly check into any organization before you sign on for a homestay, though.

  2. Yes. There are several agencies that offer homestay. I was recently in Nepal and home-stayed at a place called Baneshwor in Kathmandu. The place is run by two elderly women. I was given a room with attached bath with western-style toilet (3 star standard) and two meals of “dal-bhat” and occasional “Khaja”. I paid 40,000 Rs. (which is roughly 500 $). I thought it was a very good deal and I actually felt at home as I received a very warm hospitality, that I dont receive even when I go to my mother’s house on the east-side. The ladies were vegetarian but they would cook nice chicken curry 3-4 times a week.
Nepali people normally dont eat breakfast and eat an early lunch (around 9:30-10:00) and dinners are served around 7:30 in the evening. “khaja” or tiffin is offerred around 3 30 -4 pm. I was also offered a bottle of beer once every week. However, I could sense that drinking was not very much appreciated at home, thus I avoided after the second week. the house also had power back-up, which was really helpful. laundry was inclusive (but was strickly advised not to give under wear to the ladies to be washed, as it would be an insult). The house had a big balcony that I could use. I had a telephone connection and the house had reasonably fast internet connection and a laptop that I was allowed to use. The house was also very safe..
A few no-nos were: never to walk inside the house with my shoes on, no guests, especillay of opposite sex, were allowed (I was told that it would be an insult); never to leae dirty dishes on the dining table; not to leave dirty linen scattered in the room and there was midnight curfew (not to disturb the hosts after 12 midnight)
I used the services of Himal venture trek (there is a website just google). Try contacting a guy named Prakash Pradhan. He is a great guy he will do everything to make your life comfortable while in Nepal, he also arranged pick-up and drop off from the airport for me!
I will return to Kathmandu soon.
